This book is aimed at students who wish to bridge this gap between real Japanese literature and the reading material of textbooks.This book will also help students learn or solidify a lot of the grammar required to pass level N4 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test as well as expand their vocabulary, because while the stories in this collection are based on stories from Japanese folklore, they have been written in a more accessible manner and with common words.

I cannot praise this book highly enough.It's exactly what I was looking for. I'm a self-taught learner who has been through Genki 1 and 2. I've been trying to play video games in Japanese (with modest success) but have found the jump between textbook Japanese and authentic material Japanese a big stretch (it always is). This graded reader helps fill that gap.I've studied 3 foreign languages to advanced levels (German, Chinese, Spanish) and have used graded readers for all 3 to bridge that gap. This book (and I hope the whole series) does something no other graded reader I know of does. It gives grammatical and lexical explanations as you're reading. It's wonderful.Any graded reader will have appropriately graded reading content.Good graded readers have a gloss of vocabulary words.Even better graded readers have an English literal translation.This book has all that AND detailed grammatical and lexical explanations. You have nice, natural language and there is NO doubt to the meaning of anything because the explanations make it abundantly clear what's being said. This is especially valuable for self-taught learners with no teacher to ask for clarification.I will be buying the advanced versions too when the time comes.(This is also my first Amazon review, so that tells you something too!)
